Essential Equipment for the Highland Games
Scottish Highland Games combine strength, skill, and tradition unlike any other competition does. Non-traditional implements like logs and stones means having the right equipment makes all the difference. At 4Throws, our highland games equipment replicates those unique events and their needs.
The Events
Caber:
Tossing a log may be on the list of items you wouldn't expect athletes to throw, but don't tell the Scottish. This unique event requires tossing a large log or "caber." Having the caber land in a perfect straight line is where this event is won.
Stone Put:
Similar to the traditional shot put event. The stone put uses an irregularly shaped stone for the put. Most commonly the event is a stationary throw with some featuring a limited approach / glide. The Dominator Indoor Highland Games Stones are perfect for keeping your technique sharp year-round, without the risk of chipping your training area.
Weight Over Bar:
The throwers version of the pole vault (sort of). In this event throwers use one-hand to get a 56-pound weight over a bar. Women use a 28-pound implement here. Highland Games Throwing Weight helps you get the feel of the heavier 56-pound weight you may not normally be able to find in a traditional throwing weight.
Scottish Hammer:
Few events demand as much balance and rotational control as the hammer. A quality training hammer paired with protective hammer boots will help you safely build strength and speed for competition day.
Sticking to the hammer name more accurately, the Scottish hammer is a wooden handle and a metal ball attached to the top. Men throw a 16-lb light hammer, and a 22-lb heavy hammer. Women in the event throw a 12-lb light hammer and a 16-lb heavy hammer.
