Why Overweight Discs?

Overweight discuses are built to the exact same dimensions as a competition discus, same diameter, same rim profile, same feel in the hand. The only difference is the weight. Because the implement feels identical at release, athletes build strength and power through the full range of motion without having to relearn their mechanics when they switch back to competition weight.
Coaches use overweight discuses to build specific strength through the throw without separating it from technique work, which is where a lot of general gym training falls short. A squat or a pull builds raw strength, but an overweight discus trains that strength exactly where it gets applied in competition. Because the dimensions stay true to spec, throwers can work with overweight implements right up to the competition season and transition back to their competition discus without any adjustment period.
