High School Javelin

From NFHS weight requirements to the choice between steel and rubber tips, here is what every high school javelin thrower and coach needs to know before buying. Check out the quick video here.

High School Javelin Weight Requirements

NFHS rules require high school boys to throw an 800 gram javelin and high school girls to throw a 600 gram javelin. Unlike some events where training at a lighter weight is common early in the season, most high school javelin programs train at or near competition weight year round to build the arm strength and mechanics specific to the implement athletes will throw on meet day. Selecting a high school javelin that meets NFHS specifications ensures athletes are developing with the right implement from day one.

Steel Tip or Rubber Tip?

In high school for javelin athletes have two different tip types to work with. Rubber tip and steel tip. Steel tip is the same style college or professionals use. Rubber tip is for 8 states that require a safer alternative to steel tip. Those 8 states are:

  • Alabama
  • Florida
  • Idaho
  • New Jersey
  • North Dakota
  • South Dakota
  • South Carolina
  • Washington

When you are buying a javelin ensure your state throws the event, and if so, which tip you need. Rubber tip javelins are NOT, just steel tip with a cap on them. Rubber tip javelins are blunted under the rubber tip, so the two types are not interchangeable.
