How to Choose a Discus

Choosing the Right Discus

The right discus depends on many factors and setting yourself up for success starts here. Brandon walks through the many aspects that can impact your decision and you'll be a more informed thrower as well.

Factors to Consider

Many throwers focus on the specific competition weights for their decision making (1kg discus for women, 1.6kg for high school boys, and 2kg for competition men). However, rim weight can play a much more extensive role in the flight and spin characteristics of the disc itself. Choosing the right discus rim weight gives you the confidence to throw knowing you're using the best equipment for yourself. Read a quick article here for a more in-depth dive into rim weights.

Training for Discus

There is a wide range of tools available to throwers who would like to train the discus. The ATE Discus Training Tool looks closer to a throwing weight, though it is designed to keep your arms extended, known as "dragging the discus."

For some more focus on indoor throwing, a discus training ball is a very safe and effective way to train the throw with focus on footwork and the release timing. Staying indoors we also love the use of rubber discs. These tools are safe, affordable, and reliable to grow your skills year round. We have a range of styles from traditional rubber discs, rubber discs with straps, and rubber discs colored to not mark up gym floors during indoor throwing.

Training over-weight and under-weight discs gets you out into the circle throwing, practicing that speed and power. No matter which way you decide to throw, train, or prepare, 4Throws has the supply and inventory to get you throwing your best!
