How to Choose a Javelin
Choosing the Right Javelin
At 4Throws we have a wide range of javelins. Choosing the right javelin can feel like an overwhelming task. There are seemingly endless styles, weights, and brands.
Factors at Play
There are several factors at play when choosing your javelin. While competition weights are set in stone, you can always train a little over and under weight. These training javelins provide the ability to work on speed (under-weight), and strength (over-weight). When looking for competition weight javelins women throw the 600g javelin and men throw the 800g javelin. Below the collegiate and professional level, high school javelin throwing varies from state to state. Knowing whether you need a rubber tip or steel tip javelin saves a lot of headaches later on. Read our article on choosing the right javelin for your state. Remember, a rubber tip javelin is not just a steel tip javelin with a rubber tip on top, they are different designs.
Training Devices
When training the javelin throw we recommend using a few different tools to maximize your time and effort. A jav ball is a great way to practice throwing in a safe and controlled environment. We like these training devices to be useful indoors and outdoors. The shell of the jav ball can withstand the impact of being thrown at the wall.
Similar to the javelin ball is the nocken ball. The main difference is the protrusion that helps train the fork grip that javelin throwers can use.
Getting more into the feel of a javelin itself is the javee. This fun yet simple device uses the grip/mid-section of the javelin to emulate that feeling of holding a javelin. Simply connect it to any fence or wall that can hook up to a carabiner and you're on your way. Feel the resistance from the cord and train that feeling of throwing your next PR!
