Official High School Discus Weights
High school athletes throwing the discus use specific weights. Boys throw the 1.6kg discus, and girls throw a 1.0kg discus. The standards for this event are set by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
Discus Size and Specifications
Discus specifications such as diameter and thickness are set standards as well. These narrow ranges make proper care and maintenance of your discs important.
Boys Discus
- Diameter: 209mm - 211mm
- Thickness: 40mm - 42mm
Girls Discus
- 180mm - 182mm
- 50mm - 57mm
While the rim weight of the disc is not standardized. 70% rim weight is typically a great start for a beginner / intermediate thrower. For seniors or those with prior training, upwards of 80% makes more sense.

Choosing the Best Discus for High School Athletes
When choosing a discus consider your (or your student athletes) skill level. Low rim weight models are ideal for beginners and training. Use them to gain control and consistency in your form. For more experienced throwers we recommend high rim weights.
Consider the material as well. Carbon fiber discs are the most expensive and fragile, and should be used by experienced and elite throwers. The mid-range of materials would be a polymer what feels like plastic with some added durability and grip. Great discs to get better with. Entry level discs are typically made from plastic.
